The Design Brief
This couple was overwhelmed by the expanse of lawn at their home. They wanted a retreat to escape to that could also accommodate large parties and their children. The brief included a request for hydrangeas, a New England aesthetic, and flexibility for future renters.
I designed a brick, raised bed courtyard as the main sightline out the back doors, complete with a white wooden archway for climbing roses. Multi-functionality was my focus with this design. The Nantucket-style courtyard anchored the space visually. The courtyard supported vegetable gardening, created seating on the planter edge for parties, and included decomposed granite flooring in the center for a fire pit or a kiddie pool, depending on the season. The addition of a semi-circle driveway improves utility for a growing family and adds appeal for potential renters.
Many thanks to these clients for a fun design brief!
